Meet Avery

Welcome! ようこぞ! Välkommen!

I am glad you stopped by!  Holm is this Way is a documentation of my travels and becoming a teacher. I love learning whether it is a new language, a dance step, or how to gut a fish! So you might find a little bit of everything here.

Currently, I am a graduate student at the University of Oulu in Finland in the Education and Globalization Program. Before coming to Finland, I worked in Japan as an Assistant Language Teacher (ALT) for four years. I learned a lot about teaching and Japan’s public education system. I also became a formal student of Ikenobo, a school of Japanese flower arranging.

My passion for education is fueled by my personal struggle with APD (Auditory Processing Disorder), experiencing the challenges and triumphs of students and teachers, and my unwavering faith that education – in and outside the classroom – can change the world.
